Less than one week ago Congressman Rep. Ike Skelton declared LGBT Americans second class citizens. He wants me and my spouse Scott to simply go back into our closet. I asked for his public apology and you answered. Thousands of people in Missouri have signed GetEQUAL's petition to demand that Rep. Ike Skelton apologize for his homophobic comments regarding "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" legislation:
"The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Tuesday that he thought the military should keep its ban on openly gay service members in part because he did not want to open a national discussion about homosexuality. The chairman, Representative Ike Skelton, a conservative Missouri Democrat, said he thought the debate in Congress over the proposed repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy might force families to explain homosexuality to their children. “What do mommies and daddies say to their 7-year-old child?” Mr. Skelton asked reporters at a news media breakfast."
Will you help me deliver our petitions to Rep. Skelton?
In order to make it clear to Rep. Ike Skelton that his views on LGBT service members serving honestly and openly in the military are outdated, I need local Missourians to deliver signatures from our petition drive to his district offices this Thursday June 17th 11:00am. I know this is very short notice, but we must hold Rep. Skelton to the same standard we hold any elected official.
So can I count on you joining me on Thursday 11:00 am in Jefferson City, MO? I am especially encouraging folks to bring their families with them to his office, including our children. Imagine an 8 or 10-year-old delivering the message directly to Rep. Ike? Rep. Ike Skelton needs to know that some families have two mommies or two daddies.
Carpooling is available; however, only from Kansas City, Branson, Springfield, St. Louis and Columbia, Missouri. The event takes place at 11:00am in Jefferson City, about 2 hours 30 minutes from Kansas City, St. Louis or Springfield. The action is over at Noon. You can expect to depart from your city around 8:00 am and be home by 2:30pm.
Sincerely,
Ed Reggi
